Do you sometimes dream of a place where everything is a bit different, a bit slower, more friendly, more supportive, more respectful? A place where you can project all your wishes and desires? Where you can do and leave what you want? So do we. This is the story of Babaluca.

Als ich Luca kennen lernte, hatten wir beide einen ähnlichen Traum: Wir wollten ausbrechen aus dem Hamsterrad, das uns zu immer mehr, immer schneller, immer besser, immer schöner antrieb. Der Rest ergab sich von alleine, es waren einfach zwei Puzzleteile desselben Traums, die sich gefunden hatten und nun zusammengefügt wurden.

 

Luca wollte als Zimmermann seiner Fantasie freien Lauf lassen, ohne von Bauvorschriften in seiner Kreativität eingeschränkt zu werden. Ich suchte als Soziologiestudentin nach alternativen Gesellschaftsmodellen und träumte von einer Welt, in der die Menschen offen aufeinander zugehen, das Glück nicht nur in materiellen Dingen suchen und respektvoll mit sich und der Natur umgehen.

 

 Unseren Traum würden wir kaum in der Schweiz realisieren können, so viel stand fest. Deshalb begannen wir, die Welt zu erkunden, und da wo es uns am besten gefällt, da wollten wir bleiben. Wir haben viele Länder und wunderschöne Orte bereist, tolle Menschen kennen gelernt und viel erlebt. Schliesslich sind wir im Delta des Paraná Flusses hängen geblieben.

 

Wieso? Das Wasser ist braun und lehmig, es hat Mücken ohne Ende, die argentinische Wirtschaft ist regelmässig auf Achterbahnkurs und das Land im Delta wird fast im Wochentakt überschwemmt. Das soll nun der schönste Fleck Erde sein? Es gibt viele faszinierende Orte auf dieser Welt, doch letztlich hat uns das Zusammenspiel aus der einzigartigen Schönheit des Deltas, der Authentizität und Herzlichkeit der Menschen, der geografischen Nähe zu Buenos Aires und ein paar ganz tollen Freunden zum Bleiben bewogen. Die Kombination aus totaler Abgeschiedenheit – weit genug vom langen Verwaltungsarm der Stadtregierung – und der Möglichkeit, jederzeit einen Abstecher in die nahe gelegene Stadt machen zu können, hat es uns angetan. Ausserdem mochten wir die argentinische Art, etwas anzupacken: einfach drauf los, nicht zu viel nachdenken, ausprobieren und schauen, was sich daraus entwickelt.

 

Genau so haben wir es gemacht: Im Jahr 2010 kauften wir mithilfe einer in Argentinien lebenden Freundin 8 Hektar Land ohne Strom- und Wasseranschluss. Und dann sind wir mal losgefahren, mit einem Pick Up, der fast so alt war wie wir, bepackt mit Zelt, Werkzeug sowie einer grossen Portion Abenteuerlust und Pioniergeist.

 

Heute, neun Jahre später, haben wir ganz viel gelernt, ganz viele Fehler gemacht und ganz viele Lösungen gefunden. Wir haben Hochs und Tiefs durchlebt, doch bereut haben wir es nie. Jedenfalls nie ernsthaft, auch wenn der Spruch „verchaufe dä Schissdräck“ mittlerweile zum Running Gag geworden ist.

Cuando conocí a Luca, los dos teníamos un sueño similar: queríamos salir de la rueda de hámster de nuestra sociedad capitalista. El resto vino por sí solo, eran sólo dos piezas del mismo sueño que se habían encontrado y que ahora estaban unidas.

 

Luca quería dejar volar su imaginación como carpintero, sin que su creatividad se viera limitada por las normas de construcción. Como estudiante de sociología, busqué modelos sociales alternativos y soñé con un mundo en el que la gente se acercara abiertamente a los demás, buscara la felicidad no sólo en las cosas materiales y se tratara a sí misma y a la naturaleza con respeto.

 

 

Apenas podríamos realizar nuestro sueño en Suiza, eso era seguro. Por eso empezamos a explorar el mundo, y donde más nos gustaba, queríamos quedarnos. Viajamos a muchos países y lugares hermosos, conocimos gente estupenda y experimentamos mucho. Finalmente nos quedamos en el delta del río Paraná.

 

Por qué? El agua es marrón y margosa, tiene mosquitos sin fin, la economía argentina está regularmente en montaña rusa y el país en el delta se inunda casi todas las semanas. ¿Se supone que este es el lugar más hermoso del mundo? Hay muchos lugares fascinantes en el mundo, pero al final la interacción de la belleza única del delta, la autenticidad y cordialidad de la gente, la proximidad geográfica de Buenos Aires y algunos grandes amigos nos hicieron quedarnos. La combinación de la reclusión total - lo suficientemente lejos del brazo administrativo del gobierno de la ciudad - y la oportunidad de hacer un desvío a la ciudad cercana en cualquier momento, nos ha hecho sentir especiales. I was dreaming of a place where people are open minded, seek happiness not only in material things and treat themselves and nature with respect.

 

 

We would hardly be able to realize our dream in Switzerland, that much was certain. That's why we began to explore the world, and where we like it best, we wanted to stay. We travelled to many countries and beautiful places, met great people and experienced a lot. Finally we found Babaluca in the delta of the Paraná River.

 

Why? The water is brown and loamy, it has mosquitoes without end, the Argentine economy is regularly on roller coaster course and the country in the delta is flooded almost every week. This is supposed to be the most beautiful spot in the world? There are many fascinating places in the world, but in the end it was the combination of the unique beauty of the delta, the authenticity and cordiality of the people, the geographical proximity to Buenos Aires and some great friends that made us stay. We can have the total seclusion - far enough from the city administration - and at the same time the opportunity to make a detour to nearby downtown at any time.

 

 

We also liked the Argentinean way of getting projects started: just go ahead, don't think too much, try something out and see what develops out of it. That's exactly how we did: In 2010, we bought 8 hectares of land without electricity and water with the help of a friend living in Argentina. And then we drove off with a pickup that was nearly as old as we, packed with tent, tools and a big portion of adventure and pioneering spirit.

 

 

Today, nine years later, we have learned a lot, made a lot of mistakes and found a lot of solutions. We have lived through highs and lows, but we never regretted it. At least not seriously, even if the saying "let’s sell this shit" has meanwhile become a running gag.
